2021 “CC” Privy Mark Morgan Silver Dollar

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the final year of the original Morgan Dollar with the 2021 “CC” Privy Mark Morgan Silver Dollar. Released as part of the United States Mint’s 2021 Morgan and Peace Dollar Anniversary program, this special issue brings George T. Morgan’s legendary design into the modern era while honoring the historic Carson City Mint. Its combination of classic American coinage history and modern .999 fine silver makes this a standout release within the anniversary series.

The original Morgan Silver Dollar was struck from 1878 through 1904 before returning for one final year in 1921. Carson City played a particularly memorable role in that history, producing Morgan Dollars from 1878 through 1885 and again from 1889 through 1893. For the 2021 centennial, the U.S. Mint recreated that connection through a distinctive “CC” privy mark inspired by the historic Carson City mint mark.

George T. Morgan’s Classic Liberty and Eagle Designs

The obverse features George T. Morgan’s famous left-facing portrait of Liberty. Liberty wears a cap decorated with agricultural elements and a crown bearing the word LIBERTY. The inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM appears above, while 13 stars and the date 2021 complete the design. Modern technology and historical U.S. Mint assets were used to capture the character and detail of Morgan’s original artwork.

On the reverse, a heraldic American eagle with outstretched wings holds arrows and an olive branch in its talons while surrounded by a wreath. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST and ONE DOLLAR accompany the design. Below the wreath is the defining “CC” privy, giving this anniversary release an immediate visual connection to historic Carson City Morgan Dollars.

A Modern Tribute to the Carson City Mint

The “CC” found on this 2021 Morgan Dollar is technically a privy mark rather than a mint mark. Because the Carson City Mint is no longer an operating U.S. Mint facility, these coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The special privy consists of a raised oval with the original-style “CC” mark incused into its surface, specifically created to recognize the former Carson City facility.

The Carson City Mint opened in 1870 near Nevada’s famed Comstock Lode, one of the most important silver discoveries in American history. Its association with Western silver and the Morgan Dollar has made the “CC” designation especially recognizable among collectors. The 2021 release brings that historic connection forward into a modern U.S. Mint silver dollar.

.999 Fine Silver in Original Government Packaging

Unlike classic Morgan Dollars, which were struck in 90% silver, this anniversary issue was produced in .999 fine silver with an Uncirculated finish. Containing approximately 0.858 troy ounce of silver, the coin measures 38.1 mm in diameter and features a traditional reeded edge. The U.S. Mint established an original product limit of just 175,000 coins for each of the five 2021 Morgan Dollar versions.

This 2021 “CC” Privy Mark Morgan Silver Dollar is presented in its Original Government Packaging (OGP) with the accompanying Certificate of Authenticity. Combining the iconic Morgan Dollar design, a tribute to Carson City, modern .999 fine silver and the significance of the series’ 100th anniversary, it makes an impressive addition to collections of Morgan Silver Dollars, Carson City-themed coinage and U.S. Mint silver dollars.
